The Walk for Hope
The
Foundation of Hope
In
1984 Thad and Alice Eure were inspired by a combining of insight,
experience and compassion to begin The Foundation of Hope for research
and treatment of mental illness.
The elusive nature and devastating impact of mental illness affects
1 in 4 Americans. In 1984 there were few effective methods for dealing
with any kind of mental illness and little research was being done.
The foundation began distributing grants to local hospitals and
researchers, who in turn often used the money as a basic research
or seed money to attract larger national grants.
Since
1984 nearly 2 million dollars has been awarded by the Foundation.
This money has helped generate nearly 89 million dollars. Money
brought into the Triangle for research, including the largest mental
illness research grant ever (43 million dollars) which was granted to
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In
its 20th year, the Foundation is still going strong. Every
October hundreds of volunteers and thousands of walkers gather at
the Angus Barn to raise money for a cause that affects us all.
The
walk itself began in 1988 with the passing of Thad Eure Jr. Devastated
employees sought a way to show the love and respect for the man
they so admired. They decided to raise money for the Foundation
of Hope by walking. The first year the employees of Angus Barn,
Fat Daddys, and the 42nd Street Oyster Bar walked all the
way from the Angus Barn past Fat Daddys to the Oyster Bar.
Which was a distance of over 10 miles. In the process they raised
$30,000 dollars and started a tradition that has become the primary
fund raiser for the Foundation of Hope.
